The best pizza deal in San Diego used to be at slice shops, where $6 buys you two slices and a drink… until now. Isola Pizza Bar in Little Italy has a screaming deal during happy hour: a personal-sized pie is only $5. That’s a good deal for a mass produced take-out pie from The Hut, let alone pizza made from hand-tossed dough cooked in a blistering hot oven and topped with primo mozz and San Marzano tomato sauce. I reviewed the pizza over on San Diego Magazine’s Food & Drink blog (along with the farinata — which look like fries but are made with garbanzo bean flour), but wanted to share a few more items here.

Bruschetta from Isola Pizza Bar in San Diego

Another happy hour item worth trying is the bruschetta ($4), made with bread that’s baked in the pizza oven. There’s a new version every day or two, and I struck gold with the burrata, artichoke, and prosciutto version. Try it with a glass of wine ($5).

Gelato from Isola Pizza Bar in San Diego

No matter what, save room for gelato. Isola’s gelato is made fresh, daily, and has a vastly superior texture. It’s unbelievably smooth, with a silky lightness that melts once it hits your tongue. For $8, you get three scoops and some biscotti. I tried pistachio, Nutella, and vanilla and all three were great. The Nutella was more subtle than most, with a delicate chocolate and hazelnut flavor, while the vanilla tasted slightly like root beer. The pistachio was the flavor that disappeared first, and not just because it was the scoop on top. You can also get your gelato affogado-style, with a shot of espresso on top.

Isola Pizza Bar’s happy hour runs from 3-6 p.m., daily. Everything is $5 or less, including wine, beer, and food.
